Notes for SAMUEL ELSEY:
Notes for Samuel Elsey         Taken from the work of Kathleen Fellows Fisher

Several of Samuel's aunts and uncles had settled in Missouri. In 1837 his Uncle Samuel Elsey moved to Marion County, Missouri. By the year 1839 his Uncle Jonathan Elsey moved to Macon County, Missouri and his Uncle Thomas Elsey had moved to Monroe County, Missouri. His Aunt Virginia & her husband Alexander Francis and family as well as his Aunt Julia & husband Leslie Malone and family had also settled in Carroll County, Missouri. Samuel's older brother, George Washington Elsey also moved to Carroll County, Missouri and in about 1853 around 18 years old Samuel headed west to join them all.

The following year, on September 11, 1861, at the age of 26, Samuel enlisted as a private for three years service in Company C of the 21st Regiment, of the Missouri Volunteers during the Civil War. His pension records state that he was five feet, seven inches tall, had a light complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. He had been a farmer before enlisting.

On January 15, 1864 he re-enlisted for three more years but in May and june was " absent sick in hospital", in July and August " absent without leave" and in January and February 1865 "absent sick at Columbus, Ohio". He was then transferred to the Reserves and given a disability discharge on October 20, 1865 at Camp Dennison General Hospital near Cincinnati, Ohio. His certificate states he was found " incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of staphyloma of right eye causing almost total loss of sight of said organ. Also atrophy of left arm with complete anchylosis of left wrist joint caused by rheumatic inflamation. Both diseases were contracted since enlistment and while in the line of duty. Not fit for V. R. C. (Veteran Reserve Corps) Visibility 3/4."

On an invalid pension declaration, filed in Franklin County, Ohio on October 25, 1865, states " at or near the mouth of Red River on the first day of June 1864, he was taken down with rheumatism from exposure which fell in the left arm and stiffened the left wrist joint; also in both eyes and his right eye "bursted" and has lost the sight of the right eye and the other eye is much effected, and seems he will lose the sight also of it." He also says that since leaving the service he has resided at Columbus, Ohio and his occupation has been " nothing in particular."

Having two children born prior to the war in Carroll County, Missouri he spent the next few years going back and forth between Ohio and Missouri. His third child was born about 1866 in Carroll County, Missouri and was named Viola Bell Elsey. In 1867- 1868 he was living at 49 Scioto in Columbus, Ohio. His forth child, Alice "May" Elsey was born April 6, 1868 in Missouri. In November 1874 she was admitted into the Ohio Institution for the Deaf & Dumb in Columbus, Ohio. The cause of her deafness was given as whooping cough at the age of six months. The following year Samuel was living on Charles Street near Henry, east of Goodale Park, Columbus, Ohio with His eighteen year old son David W Elsey.

Their fifth child, Elmer Burton Elsey, was born in Carroll County, Missouri on October 6, 1870 and their sixth, Charles Eugene Elsey, on September 25, 1876. His wife Mary died on March 8, 1878 at their home in milespoint Township in Carroll County, Missouri. Two of their children were with her when she passed away, Francis and Viola.

The following month, Samuel admitted his son, Elmer, age eight also to the Deaf Institute in Columbus, Ohio. The cause of his deafness was given as congenital. His daughters, Viola whom was twelve and Alice "May" whom was ten were appointed guardians by the Franklin County, Ohio Courts and his youngest son Charles, whom was eighteen months old, was placed up for adoption with Augustus and Ruth Platt of Columbus, Ohio.

Two years later Samuel moved back to Missouri, where he married for a second time to Eliza Ann Allen of Ray County, Missouri on March 11, 1880. She was born August 3, 1856 in Park County, Indiana. Their son, James E Elsey was born on January 1, 1881 and samuel died just two months later on March 23, 1881.

Samuel's children, Alice "May" now 14, Elmer now 12 and Charles Eugene now six whom all were in Columbus, Ohio were appointed on October 2, 1882 to guardian Augustus Platt, whom previously applied to adopt Charles, but it wasn't finalized.

By 1889 Samuel's daughter, Alice "May" had been discharged from the Deaf Institute and was working at the State Bookbindery. She was living at a bording house nearby. It is believed she was still living in the Franklin County, Ohio area in the 1930's as she was remembered visiting her brother, Elmer in Columbus, Ohio.
